Carers UK aim to ‘put carers on the map’ during Carers Week from 10 – 16 June and is inviting unpaid carers to sign their open letter to the next Prime Minister calling for action including the reform and increase of Carers Allowance, to deliver a Carers strategy and recognise caring as the 10th protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. Sheffield Carers Centre events are taking place during the week.

Disability Rights groups all around the world have been celebrating the life of Robert Martin. whose campaigning and personal story shaped the movement and the life chances of disabled people all over the world. Robert, from New Zealand, was the only person with an intellectual disability to serve on the UN Committee for Rights of Persons with Disabilities. His advocacy was seen as trailblazing.

The world’s first ever Dysarthria Awareness Day was held in Sheffield recently. Dysarthria occurs when the muscles used to talk are weak or a person has difficulty controlling them. It most often results in slurred slow speech. Among those taking part was Disability Sheffield volunteer John Quinn.

Sheffield Council has commissioned The PA Champion project designed to raise awareness of direct payments within the city, with a particular focus on Personal Assistants. They are advertising two PA Champion posts ( closing date 7 June ) and looking for five Co-Design Group Members with lived experience of employing PAs or personal assistants themselves to help shape delivery of the project.
