Did you know that if you are disabled, have ordered a new car through Motability and are in receipt of certain benefits you can apply for a grant to take up to 40 hours of driving lessons? The scheme works in partnership with the AA Driving School, which has instructors across the UK. When the grant has been approved, the AA will find an instructor who will then contact you to arrange your first lesson.

There are various adjustments that can be made for drivers with disabilities but people taking a driving test still have to drive to the same standard as everyone else in order to pass. The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency has made adjustments for learner drivers who are deaf or have a hearing impairment to follow instructions by following prompt cards held up by their examiners during their car driving tests.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer has stated that electric vehicles (EVs) will be subject to Vehicle Excise Duty from 2025. Disabled people who are either entitled to VED exemption or a 50% reduction will continue to qualify when they make the switch to electric vehicles.

Disabled drivers who use the Motability scheme to lease vehicles will receive another insurance bonus because lockdown has led to fewer claims. If you have a Motability Scheme online account you can request to have the money transferred directly to your bank account or you will be sent the £50 payment by cheque in the next few weeks.

A petition has been set up by a Sheffield citizen to protest at discrimination against disabled drivers in the city’s major new roads upgrading scheme, claiming that ‘Streets Ahead’ have resurfaced on street parking zones across Sheffield but have not included disabled bays. Disabled adults, children and carers should be able to shop locally, meet friends and support local businesses. Without “disabled bays”, this makes it difficult and is discriminatory.
