Prompt Action For Deaf Drivers

Prompt Action For Deaf Drivers

There are various adjustments that can be made for drivers with disabilities but people taking a driving test still have to drive to the same standard as everyone else in order to pass.

The Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency has made adjustments for learner drivers who are deaf or have a hearing impairment to be prompted by following prompt cards held up by their examiners during their car driving tests.

The examiner will use written notes at the start of the test ( or the day before ) to explain what will happen. If you lip read, they’ll also look at you so you can lip read what they’re saying.

The examiner will usually give directions as hand signals. These will be explained before the test starts. The prompt cards have short written instructions and diagrams so the person taking the test knows what to do. Your examiner will not use the cards when the car is moving.

You can see a selection of the cards here.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
