Get A Grant To Take Driving Lessons

Get A Grant To Take Driving Lessons

Did you know that if you are disabled, have ordered a new car through Motability and are in receipt of certain benefits you can apply for a grant to take up to 40 hours of driving lessons?

If you have a Motability car on order but only a provisional licence, this grant can provide up to 40 hours of driving lessons to help you pass your driving test. This includes time to get used to any adaptations or controls you will have in your new car. You will need to pay for both the theory and practical driving tests.

If you are an existing Scheme customer and have had a Motability grant for the adaptations made to your car, a Driving Lesson Grant can help pay for familiarisation lessons on how to use the new controls.

The scheme works in partnership with the AA Driving School, which has instructors across the UK. When the grant has been approved, the AA will find an instructor who will then contact you to arrange your first lesson.

Here is an article on the scheme in Sheffield’s local paper The Star

You must be in receipt of one of these disability allowances to join the Motability Scheme:

*Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP
*Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance
*Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment
*Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of the Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
*War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
*Armed Forces Independence Payment

And, to be eligible for driving lessons, you must also receive a Government assessed means-tested benefit (listed below):
Universal Credit;
*Income Support;
*Employment and Support Allowance (income-related);
*Jobseekers Allowance (income-based);
*Housing Benefit;
*Council Tax Benefit (Council Tax Support, Council Tax Reduction) or Rate Relief for customers living in Northern Ireland (not including the 25% discount under the Disabled Band Reduction Scheme or Single Occupancy Reduction);
*Pension Guarantee Credit;
*Working Tax Credit.

To find out how to apply go to Motability’s driving lessons grant scheme.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
