ArtWorks Together is an international competition,established by ArtWorks South Yorkshire, offering adults with learning disabilities and/or autism the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents to gain the recognition they deserve. There are cash prizes for the winning entries and selected submissions will be exhibited at Wentworth Woodhouse. Entry closes on 12 February 2021

Sheffield Carers Centre new ‘Keep in Touch’ guide aims to help carers, and those they care for maintain social connections whilst also following physical distancing guidelines. The 12-page guide highlights the importance of having social interaction and lists some of the most popular ways people are now keeping in touch.

Sheffield Cycling 4 All has secured funding for storage space to keep their selection of adapted bikes after having to move from their original base due to alterations to the Hillsborough park’s amenities. Sheffield City Council has set up an online survey to gauge opinions on the storage space itself and how it should look. Please contribute to the discussion about the planning proposal. The survey closes on 3 February.

The Disability Unit at the Cabinet Office is developing a national strategy for disabled people. Publication is planned for Spring 2021. To help the government with understanding the barriers that disabled people face and what it may need to focus upon to improve the lives of disabled people, the Disability Unit has issued a survey hoping to hear about your views and know more about your experiences.The survey will be open until 23 April 2021. Responses received before 13 February 2021 will inform the development of the National Strategy, while those received after this date used to inform its delivery.

Criminals are using the COVID-19 vaccine as a way to target the public by tricking them to hand over cash or financial details. They are sending convincing looking text messages letting people know they are eligible for the vaccine or phoning people directly pretending to be from the NHS, or local pharmacy. Be alert to and find out how to report any scams.

People with hidden disabilities and conditions such as autism and Parkinson’s Disease are much less likely to be approved for a Blue Badge, an investigation by the BBC has revealed. Of 109 councils who responded to a BBC Shared Data Unit Freedom of Information Request,80% across the UK had higher approval rates for physical conditions. In ten councils the disparity between physical and hidden conditions was more than 50%.

Disability Sheffield has been working hard to raise the importance of accessibility at Covid-19 vaccination venues. The conversations and one site visit over the last week have helped to raise issues and suggest solutions so that everything flows more smoothly.
