LIstening Line Still There for You
22 September 2021
Sheffield Mind’s Listening Line service has expanded its remit and can now offer a listening service to all people over 18 years of age. If you’re feeling anxious about Covid-19 and what happens now, or you have concerns about the vaccine, or you’re experiencing loneliness or isolation and you’d like to talk about it, you can call and speak to a friendly operator who’ll listen and where appropriate, give advice about local services which you might like to approach for support.

Rethink Recruiting Experts by Experience

Health and Social Care Strategy Consultation

Throughout September, October and November Heart n Soul will be hosting free online events for people with and without learning disabilities and autistic people. It’s a season of live music, dance, art, baking poetry and radio.Their next event is a free online club night on Friday 24 September from 7pm.

Writing Happiness

Applications are now open for a free online creative writing development course funded by Arts Council England. The course is entitled ‘Writing Happiness – Writing Back Joyfully’ and is run by and for D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent writers, including people with long term mental health problems and chronic illnesses. The closing date for applications is 30th September

Our Halo Code Commitment

We are pleased to announce that Disability Sheffield has adopted the Halo Code to prevent race-based hair discrimination in our workplace. Race-based hair discrimination is where Black people are told their hair textures and hairstyles are inappropriate, unattractive, and unprofessional due to racist attitudes. We want to to ensure no members of our team, both employees and volunteers, are ever made to feel ashamed or excluded due to their hair.

Covid Plans in Place

The Government has issued new guidance on the COVID-19 response in an Autumn and Winter Plan for England. Plan A introduces an enhanced vaccination programme offering a first dose of vaccine to 12-15 year olds and a booster dose to individuals who received vaccination in Phase 1 of the COVID-19 vaccination programme. If the data suggests the NHS is likely to come under unsustainable pressure, the Government has prepared a Plan B.

Cawston Park Closure

We are shocked and disgusted to hear of the deaths of Joanna, Ben and Nicholas and the appalling lack of ‘care’ they received at Cawston Park. How many more deaths? How many more closures? How many more reports and recommendations ? How many more years do we have to wait until the government acts to close private assessment and treatment units for people with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs? We call on the government to act NOW.

The long awaited Government proposals to ‘fix’ the care crisis has been announced but is ‘too little too late’ says Disability Rights UK. The BBC has produced an article entitled Social care changes at a glance covering what is being proposed and how the changes will be funded.The social care reform proposals do not kick in for another two years.
