RISE to Self Love

Mulembas d’Africa, Our Mel and Move More Sheffield are offering a FREE 8 Week Self Love development programme tailored for black and mixed African women. RISE is designed to engage, empower and encourage you throughout a series of workshops, including African movement, strength building,yoga and mindful nutrition sessions.The application deadline is Wednesday 18 August

Are you an adult who has grown up with a disabled brother or sister? Would you like to meet others who just ‘get’ what life as a sibling is like? You’re not alone. The UK charity Sibs has a ‘Sheffield Support Group’ that currently meets online.If you’re a parent Sibs also has information and tips for supporting young siblings with feelings, attention, and understanding disability or additional needs.

Can my PA Refuse to Wear a Mask?

The Independent Living Group, a UK wide membership organisation set up to support Individual Employers and their staff, has reported a lot of enquiries from individual employers and Direct Payment professionals about the continued use of PPE since the relaxation of restrictions in England on 19th July. In response to this ILG Support have put together a new advice note for individual employers explaining that in some cases, individual employers won’t be quite so ready to relax the rules.

Social Club Offers Health and Care

A new social cafe and lunch club has been set up by SACMHA Health and Social Care, a Sheffield-based organisation which aims to provide culturally sensitive help, particularly to those who feel marginalised or who struggle to access mainstream services. It will take place at the SADACCA building on The Wicker, every Thursday from August 5th.

Woman Wins Battle Over BSL At Covid Briefings

A deaf woman from Yorkshire won a claim against the government after a judge found a lack of sign language at two Covid briefings “served to disempower, to frustrate and to marginalise”.Ms Rowley launched the court action against Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove in relation to the “data briefings” on 21 September and 12 October 2020.

Sheffield Voices is proud to announce we have secured funding from the Arts Council to run a self-advocacy drama group, Pyjama Drama. We are on the lookout for people with a learning disability who want to join us to come and make theatre about their experiences of being in lockdown during Covid.

Disabled People Reject New ‘tick box’ National Disability Strategy.

The DPO Forum Engand , made up of Disabled Peoples Organisations, including Disability Sheffield, has issued a press release expressing outrage at the Government’s decision to go ahead with the launch of a national disability strategy saying that is not a strategy, does not address key problems, does not reflect the issues and priorities of Disabled people and was not developed with Disabled people organisations.

SC4A are recruiting to a new role of Zoom host and promoter.During Covid SC4A set up 4 inclusive online classes – Movement 4 All, Yoga 4 All, Boxing 4 All and Dance 4 All. The classes are led by professional instructors but we need someone to host the classes and do some additional online promotion work. You will need to be comfortable using zoom and social media and confident in your communication skills.We are looking for someone to work 7 hrs per week.The closing date is Monday 23 August.

Sheffield Voices Express Anger Over Abuse Scandal

Learning disabilities self-advocacy group Sheffield Voices has called for change and expressed anger in a video after an autism and learning disability unit was closed to new admissions . A CQC report identified that The Firshill Rise unit was not safe or effective and people experienced harm because of a lack of protection, abusive incidents, restraint and seclusion.
