Homes Not Hospitals

Disability Sheffield’s learning disability self advocacy group Sheffield Voices and the University of Sheffield are hosting an event about hospitalisation and delayed discharge of people with learning disabilities and autistic people ,the impact it has on their life and those who care about them. It is aimed at people with learning disabilities and autistic people and the larger population to bring people together to talk about and understand this topic. The event is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences.

When: 28th of October
Time: 3 to 7 pm
Where: The Circle Sheffield, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield, S1 4FW

A short co-produced film (15 minutes) will be shown at the event which has been led by people with lived experience of long-stay hospitals either through their own admission or admission of people they care for who want to share their stories. This will be followed by discussions with experts by experience, professionals and researchers.

Before the film, we will have an interactive space with stalls from organisations working with people with learning disabilities and autistic people and some fun activities.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
