It’s very timely to release our video just as a coalition of charities, SignHealth , Sense, RAD, RNIB, LDEngland, Visionary, RNID and HealthWatch have come together to review how the Accessible Information Standard has impacted patient experiences, five years on from its implementation in 2016. We are shocked and disgusted to hear of the deaths of Joanna, Ben and Nicholas and the appalling lack of ‘care’ they received at Cawston Park. How many more deaths? How many more closures? How many more reports and recommendations ? How many more years do we have to wait until the government acts to close private assessment and treatment units for people with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs? We call on the government to act NOW.

The long awaited Government proposals to ‘fix’ the care crisis has been announced but is ‘too little too late’ says Disability Rights UK. The BBC has produced an article entitled Social care changes at a glance covering what is being proposed and how the changes will be funded.The social care reform proposals do not kick in for another two years.

This briefing paper by the Institute for Public Policy Research examines the impact of the pandemic, following decades of increasing regional inequalities, on the lives of disabled people across the north of England.Their conclusions emphasise that now is the time for policymakers to act and ensure that disabled people have equal access to opportunity across the North and the rest of the UK.

Action group Disabled People Against Cuts is inviting you to to make a big noise about the £20 cut to Universal Credit coming in September and the reintroduction of sanctions and conditionality returning in October in its latest protest against Government policies under the hashtag @AudioRiot. The planned protest will be at Westminster on Tuesday September 28th, but local branches , like DPAC Sheffield will also be taking part in a nationwide version on the Saturday September 25th.

The vision of the Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE) is ‘a world where inclusive education is a right not a struggle’ and they campaign for the inclusion of all Disabled learners in mainstream education.ALLFIE are looking for more Disabled Young people, aged between 16 and 25, to get involved in their’ Our Voice project’ and join in their online sessions and discussion topics from mid September onwards.

A new specialist service in Sheffield aiming at helping patients suffering with the long-term effects of Covid-19 has been shortlisted for a national Health Service Journal Patient Safety Award. Resources and supporting information to help people manage their post-Covid recovery are available on Sheffield Teaching Hospital’s website.
