Disability Sheffield as a member of the Access Liaison Group are supporting a petition that seeks to safeguard the access officer positions within Sheffield City Council. If Sheffield wants to be leaders in the field of inclusivity for disabled people then it has to lead by example and retain its Access Officers in order to ensure the involvement of disabled people around consultation and the built environment. This article includes a link to the change.org petition where our goal is to reach 100(00) signatures and we need more support.

Sheffield’s Equality Hub Network is looking for people to give their opinion on how it is all going.The Hubs were established five years ago to give people a real voice in influencing both the work of Sheffield City Council and things in the city more generally and they would like to see if that is happening effectively. Their survey closes on 28 March.

For more than 8 years disabled people in the UK have been hit by cuts in vital services, cuts in income and changes to the benefit system which are cruel and harmful. The Disability Hub asks, Is there is at least one alternative to these ideas: Basic Income Plus? Sheffield City Council is setting up its new Equality Objectives, and is looking for individuals and organisations willing to help by being consulted.The council is required to set at least one Equality Objective every four years but this time has decided to set up four, each with a set of three or more aims, in a bid to make the city equal for all.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has said it is ‘disappointed’ by the UK Government’s failure to improve disability rights following damning assessments from the United Nations. A report by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities gave details of the Government’s failures to protect disabled people’s rights across many areas of life in the UK in August 2017. They were asked to report back on progress on a number of areas one year on.

Are you interested in technology? Are you aware of the Equality Act but would like to know more? if so Disability Rights UK would like to hear from you. They are about to launch a project called Right to Participate, which aims to increase awareness of the Equality Act, especially the ways it can protect disabled people from discrimination in everyday situations.
