The College of Medicine was founded in 2010 to reform healthcare so that it works for everyone in a way that’s inclusive, progressive and compassionate. The College wants to redefine medicine beyond pills and procedures, to reconnect practitioners with patients, people with their environment and use both conventional and non-conventional approaches to health. Their new manifesto, Hope for the Future, is their vision for better healthcare in the next decade.

The government has published updated guidance on how personal assistants ( PAs ) working in adult social care in England can access twice weekly Covid-19 testing. Personal assistants will be eligible for testing if they provide care that requires them to come within 2 metres of an adult over the age of 18 who they support.Personal assistants should order a box of 7 lateral flow tests (LFTs) every 21 days for themselves, or an employer can order test kits on their behalf and all test results must be registered.

Everyone in England without symptoms of Coroavirus is able to take a free rapid Coronavirus (COVID-19) test twice a week from 9 April.You can now order Coronavirus (COVID-19) rapid lateral flow tests online. Please do not use lateral flow tests if you have any Covid symptoms (a high temperature, a cough that won’t stop, or a loss/change in taste/smell) when you should self isolate and book a Coronavirus test or order a home test kit.

Disability Sheffield is running a Zoom drop in every 2 weeks for disabled people to come along and share your experiences both good and bad about what life’s been like for you since the pandemic started. Don’t be alone, come and join us (with a cuppa) to keep us in the loop of how COVID restrictions are affecting you. The next drop ins are on Monday 18 January and Monday 1 February from 11am -12noon.

With another lockdown taking place at the moment, finding ways of staying fit and healthy while stopping indoors has become imperative. Disability Rights UK has teamed up with Sense and Durham University to produce pre-recorded videos aimed at supporting disabled people to get active at home during the coronavirus outbreak. The new Get Yourself Active at Home timetable – with new workouts released regularly until the end of February – is now available!

Sheffield City Council has issued advice on staying safe this Christmas. This takes the form of a video in which Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in the city, goes through ten helpful principals for you to carefully consider whilst planning your Christmas arrangements.The government’s revised message is that a smaller Christmas is a safer Christmas, and a shorter Christmas is a safer Christmas.

As part of their Covid-19 work to support unpaid carers, NHS England has produced a carers’ identification letter and guidance. It has been developed to support unpaid carers, including young carers, who may need to provide care to people in their own home, or across multiple homes. Its purpose is to provide an explanation of why someone may need to be out more frequently or visit different homes.The letter has not been made available for the public to download, but can be issued to named carers by a health/care provider or carers’ support organisation, including from Disability Sheffield.

Each month Healthwatch Sheffield collate enquiries from members of the public, feedback from voluntary sector colleagues, and stories shared on Care Opinion about issues Sheffield people have faced while trying to access health and social care services during the pandemic. Healthwatch Sheffield also conducted a survey from late May to late July to find out how changes in Health and Social Care services caused by the pandemic affected local people, and the way they access support and have recently published their findings.
