    The Race Equality Commission was set up in 2020 to provide a non-partisan strategic assessment of the nature, extent, causes and impacts of racism and race inequality in the City .The Commission’s programme of hearings starts again this month with events live streamed and available online for all to watch for free including the Health Hearing Day on 13 May.

    There should be no barriers to voting for disabled people. Everyone should have the right to vote on their own and in secret. You have the right to support if you would like to vote. In their new report ‘Elections for Everyone’ the Electoral Commission is calling on the UK governments, political parties and those who run elections to make voting more accessible. At Disability Sheffield we’re concerned that some polling stations in Sheffield are not accessible.

    Dementia Action Week Call for Stories

    A leading charity representing people affected by dementia is calling for stories to show the impact of the broken care system on their everyday lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, in order to improve social care policy. The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Action Week, which takes place 7-23 May, is bringing social care reform back to the top of the agenda saying that the social care system is no longer fit for purpose.

These include the World Snooker Championship currently talking place in Sheffield.

    Sheffield Cycling 4 All is getting back to park life with group and solo sessions taking place in Hillsborough Park due to the relaxation of lockdown regulations and online activities are still taking place for those who may not be able to get out.     The Guardian has reported on an inquest taking place at Sheffield Town Hall into the tragic death of a young woman with learning disabilities. Laura Booth stopped eating after she was admitted to the Royal Hallamshire hospital for a routine eye operation in October 2016 after her attempts at communication were, her family says, ignored by clinicians.

    Consultation on Compulsory Vaccination of Care Home Staff

    The government is seeking views on a proposal to make COVID-19 vaccination a condition of deployment in older adult care homes.This would mean older adult care home providers could only use those staff who have received the COVID-19 vaccination (or those with a legitimate medical exemption) in line with government guidance.The deadline for responding to the consultation is Friday 21 May 2021.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
