Inclusive Justice for All

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has published the results of their inquiry into whether the criminal justice system treats disabled people fairly. The inquiry particularly focused on disabled people with cognitive impairments, mental health conditions and neuro-diverse conditions finding that the system is not systematically recognising the needs of disabled people. This means defendants and accused people risk not being able to participate properly in the legal process.

Online Workshops : Help Shape the Future of Sheffield Health and Social Care

Two on-line workshops delivered via Zoom have been announced for service users and carers, during which SHSC want to explore how you would like to see them working together more closely with service users and carers/young carers. The feedback from the workshops will help guide SHSC to better co-produce the Trust’s strategies as well as improving the services and care they offer. The workshops will be running online on Thursday 9 July 10am–12 pm and Friday 10 July 2 pm–4 pm if you’d like to take part.

'Guide Dogs' Publishes Guidance for Transport Providers and Businesses

As people in the UK begin planning for the future after lockdown, the charity Guide Dogs have started to think about what support will be available for people with sight loss who are trying to travel safely and observe social distancing rules while making their essential journeys.

Government Calls for Evidence on the Unequal Impact of Coronavirus on Disabled People

The Government’s Women and Equalities Committee is launching three new sub-inquiries following their recent inquiry in to how Coronavirus has affected people with protected characteristics. They have submitted a call for evidence to find out how Coronavirus has affected disabled people and their access to services. You can submit your views until Monday 13th July.

Go WILD at Festival Performances

Sheffield performers are among the acts taking part in a new online festival to promote disability rights during the lockdown, which will be taking place from 3-6pm on Saturday July 11th. Jon McClure from locally-based chart band Reverend And The Makers” is one of those involved in the World Independent Living Day (WILD) as is new act Rita Resistance (pictured). WILD describes itself as “a long-term initiative to reimagine the transformation to an inclusive society with Independent Living being a central part of that vision.”

Share Your Thoughts on Staying Physically Active

For the last few months during the Coronavirus outbreak , we have been told to stay at home as much as possible to keep ourselves safe . There has been a variety of guidance around keeping physically active, as well as a variety of content created for disabled people and for people who may be unable to leave the house around getting active at home. Sheffield Sets Out its Commitments to Children and Young People with SEND

Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group have published the ‘Sheffield Inclusion Strategy’ setting out their commitments to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) . The local area SEND inspection in November 2018 identified significant weaknesses.

Participants Wanted For BBC2 Hate Crime Documentary

A planned BBC2 documentary on hate crime is looking for disabled people who have been the target of it to recount their experiences on camera. The forthcoming programme -made by a disabled filmmaker – also intends to cover the current COVID-19 pandemic and the effect it is having on disabled people.
