The Independent Living Group, a UK wide membership organisation set up to support Individual Employers and their staff, has reported a lot of enquiries from individual employers and Direct Payment professionals about the continued use of PPE since the relaxation of restrictions in England on 19th July. In response to this ILG Support have put together a new advice note for individual employers explaining that in some cases, individual employers won’t be quite so ready to relax the rules.

A new social cafe and lunch club has been set up by SACMHA Health and Social Care, a Sheffield-based organisation which aims to provide culturally sensitive help, particularly to those who feel marginalised or who struggle to access mainstream services. It will take place at the SADACCA building on The Wicker, every Thursday from August 5th.

A deaf woman from Yorkshire won a claim against the government after a judge found a lack of sign language at two Covid briefings “served to disempower, to frustrate and to marginalise”.Ms Rowley launched the court action against Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove in relation to the “data briefings” on 21 September and 12 October 2020.

Sheffield Voices is proud to announce we have secured funding from the Arts Council to run a self-advocacy drama group, Pyjama Drama. We are on the lookout for people with a learning disability who want to join us to come and make theatre about their experiences of being in lockdown during Covid.

Learning disabilities self-advocacy group Sheffield Voices has called for change and expressed anger in a video after an autism and learning disability unit was closed to new admissions . A CQC report identified that The Firshill Rise unit was not safe or effective and people experienced harm because of a lack of protection, abusive incidents, restraint and seclusion.

On the 4th of June 2021 Sheffield Transport 4 All (ST4A) wrote to the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Mayor Dan Jarvis asking for his thoughts on boosting accessibility as part of the Bus Services Improvement Plan (BSIP). The plan is an essential component of securing funds from government to keep bus services running as passenger numbers recover over the coming years. Disappointingly ST4A still have not received a reply from the mayor that responds to the accessibility points raised and has brought this to the attention of Disability Sheffield.

Are you interested in joining a Lived Experience Advisory Panel ( LEAP ) for an NHS research project on improving mental health services for people from ethnic minority backgrounds?It is hoped that the first LEAP panel will be taking place in the last week of July on a weekday with a mix of people in terms of age, gender, sexuality and ethnicity.

Healthwatch Sheffield has published its annual report for 2020-21, which gave them the chance to reflect on what was a difficult year for most and a year like no other. The organisation says that they have achieved some real highlights and spoken up for Sheffield’s communities where they could, but there’s lots that they still hope to do.

There is something for everyone – from drama to fitness to technology.Sessions are best suited to children who can remain in one room for 45 minutes at a time and cost £3 per session.
