This month we see a little more movement on the government’s promised green paper on social care. It has taken from as far back as March 2017, when the Government said that it would publish a Green Paper on social care. Here we provide an update and link on the ‘forthcoming’ Green Paper on social care for adults, which we understand will now be published at “the earliest opportunity”.

Sheffield Cycling 4 All are riding high and would like to say a massive thank you to HTK podcast listeners, who raised almost £2000 to buy four additional bikes and a specialist tricycle for Disability Sheffield’s accessible cycling project.

We’re grateful to The Barrel pub in Chapeltown who will be hosting a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to raise money for Disability Sheffield on Sunday May 26th, from noon till 4pm. We hope you can come along and we’d love to hear from you if you’re willing to volunteer to support us by helping out on the afternoon with fundraising activities such as hosting fete type games and manning our information stand.

The next meeting of the Disability Hub is on Thursday 4 April 2019 from 2-4pm at The Circle. The Hub is one of the ways in which disabled people can have a greater say on the services and businesses disabled people interact with locally.

We offer Disability Equality Training, Access Audits and support to be Disability Confident. If you run a business or organisation in Sheffield, then a workplace Access Audit and review of disability policies could open opportunities for you to a have a truly diverse and talented workforce. Let’s make sure the disability employment gap doesn’t get any bigger in our city.

Disability Sheffield has joined with over one hundred social care sector organisations by signing an open letter to Ministers criticising the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill.The letter puts on public record serious concerns about the content, progress and passage of the Bill saying the reforms pose a real threat to the human rights of people requiring the greatest support in life.

Disability Sheffield and the Disability Hub were represented at the Holocaust Memorial Day on the 28 January by Debbie Sunday. Debbie composed and recited a moving piece, questioning how we support those displaced by genocide and war in making a new home. The theme of the Memorial Day this year was Torn from Home.

We are developing training for students who might need to employ a Workplace Personal Assistant when they graduate. We are seeking to recruit 3 advisors , who are current students or recent graduates of Sheffield Hallam University or the University of Sheffield , to help us develop the training. You will receive a one off £150 payment when the work is complete. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 13th February.
