Our user led charity exists to support disabled people to live as independently as possible and to have equal rights and access. For 10 years our information and advocacy project has worked alongside disabled people supporting them to have a voice and retain choice and control over their lives. One of our more recent projects, Sheffield Cycling for All, provides exercise and social opportunities in Hillsborough Park and we’ve delivered a number of very successful projects and services over the past 16 years.
The insurance company, Ecclesiastical, is giving £1million to support charity projects that are helping to make a real difference in their communities, in awards of £1,000. £1,000 could make a real difference to the work we do at Disability Sheffield so please consider nominating us for their Movement for Good Awards. Your nomination could be the one that helps us win.
£1000 will enable our Sheffield Voices Group to work with other learning disability groups to deliver disability discrimination and hate crime training to Sheffield schools and colleges. Almost 9 out of 10 people with a learning disability has experienced bullying or harassment in any one year and there has been a 33% rise in Disability Hate Crime in 2017-2018. Last year 2,272 crimes were recorded as ‘crimes against the person’ and we believe that by educating young people about the level of trauma and devastation that hate crime causes and how discrimination affects everyone’s lives, we can go someway into reducing this.
Help us to tackle hate crime by clicking Nominate a charity on the website and enter our details. Our registered charity Number is 1112712 .Thanks for your support! The more nominations we get, the greater our chance of winning, so please spread the word. The closing date for nominations is Friday 17 May.
