Sheffield City Council launched an online survey in July 2020 asking for residents’ views about short-term care for older people. Respondents indicated their priorities and suggestions for short term care including ideas such as coastal respite opportunities for person and carer, personalised outcome based breaks, and morning and evening respite options.

Our Magic Pen writing group in partnership with the Burton Street Foundation is a friendly online group for anyone with a learning disability who loves stories and having fun with words. Every week, on Fridays from 11am to 12noon we talk about different topics, have fun together and share our news. In every session, we will write poems and stories together, and there is always time to share your creative writing too. Here’s some fantastic writing from your magic pens so far!

The theme for Carers Rights Day 2020 on Thursday 26 November is ‘Know Your Rights. Sheffield Young Carers and Sheffield Carers Centre are working together to make a series of campaign videos to mark Carers Rights Day. They want carers to understand they are not alone and that every carer has rights which can help to make their lives easier. They’d love your help so are asking carers to make a short video and send it to them by Friday 6th November.

Artists with learning disabilities and autism from South Yorkshire based arts organisation Artworks have organised a virtual gallery showcasing the artworks they have created whilst shielding during lockdown. There are 70 artists involved and pieces vary in style and medium, including both two and three-dimensional work.

Activist group Disabled People Against Cuts is compiling a dossier that they hope to present to local authorities to encourage them to not make alterations that adversely affect disabled people.

Have you ever thought about taking up yoga to boost your physical and mental wellbeing? Organised by Sheffield Cycling 4 All and funded by Sport England, our free yoga sessions take place every Tuesday evening between 7-8pm and are specifically designed for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. Qualified Yoga teacher Jane Collins knows lots of ways to adapt traditional yoga practices, so that everyone taking part can experience all the benefits that yoga offers.

Do you want to lead a healthier lifestyle but aren’t sure how to get started and keep up the good work once you have managed to get going? Disability Sheffield is here to help you by offering a new online, peer-led group for disabled people who want to lead a healthier lifestyle. The group is open to all disabled people, including people with learning disabilities and autism and takes place every Friday at 10am for one hour on Zoom. The last session is on Friday 13 November and we hope to offer another course in the New Year.

Speakup are raising awareness about the new Covid 19 Grab and Go sheet this week. If you have a learning disability or autism and need to go into hospital because of Coronavirus the Grab and Go sheet gives the information doctors and nurses need. Book a Grab and Go session on Zoom taking place every day this week from 11am to 12 noon.
