We are so proud that our very own news volunteer, John Quinn’s playlet, Marks of Respect, is featured in the Lantern Theatre’s New Writing Festival starting from Wednesday October 12th to Saturday 15th John took part in a theatre course for deaf and disabled people earlier this year, organised by Ramps on the Moon and Leeds Playhouse and partly held at The Crucible Theatre

It’s Black History Month, celebrating the contribution made to Britain by black people in the past and in the present. In a Spin-off series following the first year of marriage for the characters from ‘The A Word’ young couple Ralph and Katie face the domestic challenges faced by all newlyweds, but with the added fact that they have Down’s Syndrome. The series has been written by a team of disabled writers. Disability campaigners have welcomed the announcement of the new programme, calling it an “excellent example of disabled representation on and off screen”.

Disability charities have criticised the government for failing to provide adequate support for people with disabilities amid the cost of living crisis in an open letter to the Prime Minister. Campaigners have also created a petition calling on the government to make disabled people eligible for the £650 one-off payment that has been announced for carers.

Fortunately several organisations have set out information about ways to cope in an easy read format, including Learning Disability England, Mencap, Inclusion London and Speakup Self Advocacy.
