Wheelchair Users: Share Your Experience of Bus Journeys

Helen is an independent mobility consultant, Director of People’s Parking, law student, Meningitis survivor, disability rights campaigner and quadruple amputee. Here is what Helen says about her own experience of bus journeys “As a wheelchair user I have had many unpleasant bus rides where my wheelchair has slipped and slid about. I have heard some terrible stories… I therefore wanted to find out if this is an issue affecting only a small minority or whether it is much bigger, this is the purpose of my survey.” You can read more on this story and take part in Helen’s survey here.

    Both my wife and my self are in wheelchairs. My wife as mental health issues and finds it difficult to travel alone . We cannot travel together on buses ,trains, taxis. Community travel we could use if we know a week in advance where we want to go.
    Impossible as we cannot predict the weather.
    We cannot get up in a morning and just go,unless we pay for taxis. Very expensive as we would need 2.and my wife and me still would travel separate.
    Sheffield travel for all is not exactly true unless you have a big bank account

    I do not have a wheelchair only a mobility scooter and because I am large need the big version and have made no attempt to get on a bus because I knew they would not let me on it. Therefore I cannot get out of the village for at least 3 yrs

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
