A new video has been released to help people who care for the 7,000 people living with dementia in Sheffield.
Sheffield Carers Centre, NHS Sheffield Clinical Commmissioning Group and Enrichment For The Elderly have teamed up to produce it.
Pauline Kimantas (CEO at Sheffield Carers Centre) explains “We help over 12,000 unpaid carers, many of whom are supporting people with dementia. We know many of the public don’t think they are carers and don’t know about the support they’re entitled to. This video highlights the real-life experiences of six Sheffield carers supporting someone with dementia, but the advice they offer is relevant to all unpaid carers.”
“We are very grateful to everyone that contributed to the filming and want to ensure all carers in the city receive the support needed for their own health and wellbeing. ‘Go and get the support before you think you need it’ is just one of many excellent suggestions made by carers in the video.”
The video’s launch was attended by Dr Sarah Jones, GP and Clinical Lead for Dementia at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group who remarked “A carer has to think about other people’s needs as well as their own. A key benefit of a carer being identified early in their caring role is that they and everyone else involved receives better quality support and care.”
Many organisations are involved in the delivery of the Sheffield Dementia Strategy which aims to improve the care and support for people living with dementia, plus the thousands of family members providing unpaid care . The strategy includes a range of commmitments developed in a partnership of people living with dementia, their families and carers.
Organisations involved with the Dementia Strategy and helping carers in general are dedicated to encouraging people to identify themselves as carers and use the support available. They ask the Sheffield public a simple question: Are you a carer or do you know someone who is a carer? If so, make sure the carer (1) gets in touch with their GP practice (2) visits the Sheffield Carers Centre Website to discover more about support in the city and (3) calls the Carers Centre’s Advice Line on 0114 272 8362.
