Universal Basic Income Plus Group Set Up

Universal Basic Income Plus Group Set Up

Campaigners for a Universal Basic Income ( UBI ) have set up a group which will hold regular meetings to discuss plans.

Following a proposal paper written by disability rights campaigner Caroline Richardson and Dr Simon Duffy, who is director of the Sheffield-based Centre For Welfare Reform and the international coordinator of Citizen Network, it was decided to further publicise their aims by getting more people involved.

Basic Income Plus (or UBI+) would see a radical reform of the benefits system under which every single individual would get a secure and regular income without any sanctions or punishments, but people who for example live alone and can’t share some essential costs, have a disability that creates extra costs or are too ill to work will be paid a higher amount.

UBILabDisability has been established with online meetings due to take place twice a month, starting on Monday 23rd November at 10.30am. The first meeting will also be used to set the Lab’s agenda going forward. It will be part of the UBI Lab Network, a global network of local groups dedicated to exploring the impact UBI could have for society and every one of us.

The meetings will take place on video conferencing site Zoom. You can register for the first meeting here.

You can see full details of Simon and Caroline’s proposal (including an easy-read version) here.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
