UK Disability History Month Returns

UK Disability History Month Returns

UK Disability History Month ( UKDHM ) is now in its 13th year and takes place from Wednesday 16th November 2022 to Friday 16th December.

UKDHM is an annual event creating a platform to focus on the history of disabled people’s struggle for equality and human rights and to build resources on various themes.

This year’s theme is Disability, Health and Well Being reflecting that the Covid Pandemic “has demonstrated across the UK and around the world just how fragile are the Rights disabled people have secured for themselves and how easily we become expendable.”

“At the heart of this appalling state of affairs is that we are only conditionally human. Our rights whether we live in institutions, care homes or independently in our own homes and the community, can be ridden over by politicians, medical professionals or the population in general judging the world by ableist standards and practising deeply entrenched disabilist responses.

You can find UKDHM resources produced for and gathered around each year’s theme ( including 2022 ), and some other useful and interesting material here.

There will be an online launch of UKDHM from 7- 8.30 pm on Thursday 17th November 2022. If you are interested in taking part please email callumrussell@crconsultancy.org

UKDHM is also featured in the latest Reclaiming Our Futures Alliance (ROFA) newsletter.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
