Uber wheelchair user denied taxi service

A wheelchair user has called for tougher regulations for taxi drivers over disability laws after an Uber cab refused to pick him up.

Joshua Gardner, aged 20, from Leeds, says he was left at the roadside after being told that his chair would not fit in the car – despite it being a foldable lightweight model.

He added that this is merely one of many times he and other disabled friends have been turned down while attempting to catch a taxi, and although the vast majority of drivers are helpful, action needs to be taken to prevent similar situations.

“In my opinion there needs to be tougher regulations for taxi companies when it comes to giving someone the green light to be a driver; and more required training for all drivers on equality,” he said. “For me that is the only way things will change.”

Uber replied that they did not permit any form of discrimination and were investigating the incident.

    We have been charged an extra £5 taxi fare because my daughter uses a manual wheelchair the wheelchair folds and was placed in the boot we used City Taxis

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
