Slow Shopping Experience

Sainsbury’s supermarket in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne has launched a new shopping experience to help people with mental and physical disabilities. Weekly 2hr “Slow Shopping” sessions offer a friendlier, more relaxed atmosphere and staff have been trained to offer a helping hand. The store provides additional seating and help desks, offers fruit and cake samples, and packs items for customers. Customer Katherine Vero campaigned for slow shopping after her mother suffered from dementia. She said: “My mum used to love shopping, but as her dementia developed it became increasingly difficult and stressful for us both. When she passed away I wanted to make the experience better for other people. I was delighted when Sainsbury’s agreed to help me trial it. I hope other retailers will follow.” View Article

I think it is an excellent idea. People with disabilities should still be able to go shopping and have an enjoyable, stress free experience. Would love to see Sheffield follow suit and trail slow shopping.

very good idea, 2 hours once a week is a start.. hopefully lots of shops and stores could be supportive, they’ll get our slow money too!

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
