Sheffield Doc/Fest Volunteering Opportunities

The internationally-acclaimed Sheffield Doc/Fest celebrates its quarter-century this summer – and the organisers are looking for disabled volunteers to help it go well.

This year’s – the 25th – takes place from June 7-12, featuring films, talks and special events. It is the biggest documentary festival in Britain and the third-largest in the world. It is held at more than 20 venues in the city and the organisers aim to make it as accessible as possible. “We’re keen to encourage disabled people to apply to volunteer. All our venues have wheelchair access and we’re happy to look at any other access requirements people would need to take part,” said volunteer co-ordinator Helen Wright.

In addition this year the festival has launched a BSL Buddies scheme to ensure deaf and hard-of-hearing people enjoy the events to the fullest extent. The organisers are looking for students or professionals who would be willing to volunteer for the scheme, in which they will be paired with someone who requires BSL interpretation in order to participate and accompany them to screenings, sessions and events of their choosing. For more information on this new role you can get in touch by emailing

The deadline for applications to be a volunteer is 5pm on Friday April 20.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
