Northern Ballet In Motion Taster Sessions

Northern Ballet In Motion Taster Sessions

One of our members, Cath Sorsby, ( pictured right ) is a big fan of Northern Ballet In Motion and has attended their dance classes in Leeds for wheelchair users for a number of years. Cath recently told us :

“I went to another of their free ‘taster sessions’ last week and found the warm-up part of the session was so much more interesting than gym exercises or chairobics or physiotherapy or the usual kind of activities on offer to wheelchair users. In the second part of the session we had chance to just be ourselves and improvise as we interpreted various tasks they set us, and interpreted different types of music too.

I really enjoy the chance to improvise, experiment, explore movement in so many different ways to the usual daily experience of just getting a wheelchair to move from one place to another. There’s so much space in the Studio: so many opportunities; so much support available from staff and other group members if you want it. Nobody judges what you look like, or how you dress, or how you speak, or how you move, or how much skill or poise or experience you have. Staff quietly support anyone who doesn’t feel that they have enough ideas or imagination, and I’ve always found other group members are so willing to celebrate another person’s growing confidence and skill.

There’s no need for special clothing, gym kit, etc. Just everyday comfy clothing is fine.

The next taster session is on 12th Jan 2020, and then there’s another on 22nd March 2020.
Classes for Under-19s are from 10a.m. to noon, and classes for adults are from 1.00 – 3.00pm.
Taster class or first class is free of charge. The Cost after that is £7 per class, but not charged if participant isn’t able to come to some sessions.

After the taster session in March we have the opportunity to take part in weekly sessions as listed below:

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
