A new inclusive befriending project for BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) communities in Sheffield has been set up.
Locally-based charity Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care, established in 1966, aims to enhance older people’s quality of life through volunteers who offer the kind of support a ‘Good Neighbour’ might give.
The new Inclusive Community Care project is part of SCCCC’s existing Good Neighbour scheme helping to reduce older people’s feelings of loneliness and isolation through regular telephone support and friendly visits to their home. The new befriending project for BAME communities, will, where possible, aim to match volunteers and older people according to their cultural language and other needs.
The Good Neighbour Scheme is open to older people and volunteers from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds. However, as part of the Inclusive Community Care project SCCCC are especially looking to recruit volunteers and to support older people from BAME backgrounds and those who speak additional languages.
