Many disabled people need personal assistance to ensure they live their lives to as full an extent as possible – but there are many myths and mistruths about this which an independent living organisation is now attempting to dispel.
The European Network on Independent Living, more commonly known as ENIL, is a user-led network of disabled people, with members throughout Europe. Their mission is to advocate for Independent Living values, principles and practices: provision of personal assistance and other community supports and services, a barrier-free environment and adequate technical aids, together making full citizenship of disabled people possible.
In their latest newsletter, one highlight is a 36-page Myth Buster On Personal Assistance, the support provided to disabled people by another person they have chosen and employ, who helps them to live according to their own wishes.
It contains information intended to help disabled people choose personal assistance, including the disabled person’s family and friends and information for people who are interested in becoming personal assistants or just want to know more.
