Move Your Way

Move Your Way

Mental Health Awareness week officially took place in May. In fact, since 2001, the whole month of May has been dedicated to the importance of mental health and wellbeing, giving it the attention and consideration it deserves. But it doesn’t stop there and why should it?!

This year’s theme set by The Mental Health Foundation is “Movement: moving for our mental health”. We know our physical health and mental health are closely linked, each having an effect on the other. Exercise and movement have many benefits for mind and body and is proven to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety, release endorphins (the happy hormone!), build confidence and improve sleep. The list is endless!

This year’s theme is supported by the slogan and hashtag #Moveyourway emphasising that the focus is on you. It is about finding something you enjoy, setting your own pace and if possible, moving in a way that is right for you, whatever that may be.

Movement can look like anything you want it to, it doesn’t have to be training to run a marathon, take hours of your day or cost the earth. It can be as simple as taking the stairs instead of using the lift, getting off the bus a stop early or even just having a little dance around the kitchen while the kettle is boiling. It becomes more do-able when you think of it as sneaking in some daily moments of movement. The real focus is on “moving to make you feel good”.

However, sometimes the act of moving more is easier said than done. There are many factors that may impact someone’s ability to get out and exercise in particular, having a disability. This may affect our ability to do certain things, at certain times.

These organisations have put together a list of tips and some information on how to get more active as a disabled person. Follow these links to read and learn more:

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.
