Are you a disabled woman and a single parent? If so the Money Matters project would love to hear from you. The Women’s Hub in Sheffield has made it a priority to raise awareness of the impact of austerity and poverty on women. This is especially important at a time when Sheffield is reviewing it’s Anti- Poverty strategy and the Fairness agenda.
Their Money Matters Project, led by a group of volunteers, is gathering information from different groups of women and concentrating on single parent women because evidence shows they are more likely to experience poverty. Recent research highlights the extent to which Black and Minority Ethnic (BAMER)women and disabled women are emerging as the poorest in our society.
Disabled women face additional pressures in their everyday lives including challenges to their ability to care for and support children. Disabled women also have an elevated risk of experiencing domestic abuse, which may include financial control.
The Money Matters project is trying to make a difference by capturing voices and lived experiences which can influence decision making about service delivery. Can you help?
They want to interview as many disabled women as possible in confidence about what it’s like to be a single parent with a disability and highlight possible solutions and coping mechanisms which might assist other women. At present there are no women who identify as a single parent with a disability in the working group.
