Make a Difference:Be a Councillor Guide

What matters to you in your local area? Whatever needs changing, you could be just the person to change it by becoming a local councillor.

The Local Government Association, which represents more than 350 councils in England and Wales, has launched a new guide as part of its ‘Be a Councillor’ campaign, to support disabled residents who may be interested in representing their local community at their next local election.

The brand-new guide has been produced with the help of disabled councillors in a bid to encourage disabled people to become councillors and bring new experience into local government.

“Starting on the route into elected office can be daunting, particularly if you feel you face particular barriers in taking part fully in your community. This booklet will help you decide whether to take
the plunge and stand for election to your local council; it also outlines the additional support that is available through the ‘Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Strategy’. You could be the fresh new talent that your council is looking for.”

Very good presentation, brave of the speakers to tell their stories and had a very high impact - feedback from Mate/Hate Crime presentation and video session at Safeguarding Working Together Conference

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
