In 2025, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of Friday 28 February 2025 and will conclude on the evening of Sunday 30 March 2025, with the exact dates depending on the sighting of the moon.
For the first time, Sheffield Children’s Hospital will display special lights outside its main entrance to celebrate Ramadan and the lights will be switched on by Haroon’s daughter.
Haroon explains why:
“This thoughtful gesture is a meaningful way to honour the Muslim community while bringing together people of all backgrounds in Sheffield to support a truly kind and inclusive initiative. It’s this spirit of unity that makes our city so unique.
My name is Haroon, and I have a personal connection with Sheffield Children’s Hospital. My daughter has been under their care for 13 years, and my late son, who sadly passed away at the age of 5 in March 2023, also received care at this hospital. Over the years, I’ve seen first hand the incredible impact The Children’s Hospital Charity has had on transforming this institution, from renovating wards to introducing new facilities—all thanks to the generous support of donors.
While many people assume the government funds all these advancements, much of the progress I’ve witnessed has been made possible through charitable donations. These contributions are the lifeblood of projects that have revolutionized the hospital and its services, making a lasting difference for countless children and their families.
I am honoured to support this inspiring fundraising project and encourage individuals, businesses, mosques, and community groups to join me. Together, we can help The Children’s Hospital Charity achieve its ambitious goal of creating the National Centre for Child Health Technology right here in Sheffield. This world-leading research centre will pioneer advancements in children’s healthcare and cement Sheffield’s reputation as a global leader in care. Every contribution will help us get closer to making this vision a reality.
This Ramadan, let’s unite as a community to raise essential funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Your generosity will not only support this special Ramadan lights initiative but also help transform children’s healthcare for generations to come. Charity begins at home, and your kindness can make a lasting impact.

Thank you to all the communities of Sheffield for coming together for this meaningful cause. For those celebrating, I wish you a blessed Ramadan in advance—Ramadan Mubarak, Inshallah. May it be a peaceful and rewarding month for you all.”
The switch on at the main entrance of the hospital is on 6th March from 4.30pm with the actual switch on at 5.15pm.
