Lack Of Action On Rights Disappoints EHRC

The Equality And Human Rights Commission has said it is ‘disappointed’ by the UK Government’s failure to improve disability rights following damning assessments from the United Nations.

A report by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD Committee) gave details of the Government’s failures to protect disabled people’s rights across many areas of life in the UK in August 2017. They were asked to report back on progress on a number of areas one year on.

The report looked at topics including

  • living independently and being included in the community
  • adequate standard of living and social protection
  • work and employment
  • prejudice and negative attitudes
  • access to justice
  • involving disabled people and their organisations

The EHRC statement said: “We are disappointed by the overall lack of commitment and action from the UK government on the UN’s recommendations. We are particularly concerned about the strong evidence that disabled people continue to face serious regression of their rights to an adequate standard of living and social protection, and to live independently in the community.

You can read the EHRC report here here. It is also available in an easy read version.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
