Everyone knows current welfare benefits are failing, but what would be a better approach? An organisation set up by welfare system users to suggest ways in which it can be improved has issued an invitation to an online event to discuss their proposals.
The Commission On Social Security is a project set up to find out how to improve the social security/welfare benefits system .
All the Commissioners are Experts by Experience. This means they each have lived experience of the benefits system. The Commissioners come from a range of claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.
The Commission was launched in May last year and not long afterwards issued a ‘Call For Solutions’ asking for suggestions for a better social security system. There were over 1,000 responses.
The Commission has identified 8 ideas and is launching a public consultation to see what people think of them.
The online event will:
- Unveil the Commission’s proposals
- Explain how you can have your say
- Provide information about getting involved in the consultation
- Have British Sign Language interpretation and live subtitles.
The event takes place on Wednesday August 12 from 7.00-8.30pm and you can sign up here. However, if you are unavailable that evening but would still like details, you can email the Commission Secretary: Michael.Orton@warwick.ac.uk
