Disability need not be a barrier to getting into shape – and a Sheffield fitness club is offering weightlifting sessions using new equipment for disabled people .
Hallam Barbell is a Olympic Weightlifting and Strength Training Club based in Sheffield and housed at Sheffield Hallam University. It is an official British Weightlifting affiliated club, based on Clarkgrove Road, and is Club Mark accredited. Hallam Barbell has an ambition to make Sheffield stronger: physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.
The club runs a range of programmes to help people be fit, strong, happy and healthy. They have a disability-inclusive programme and also offer some specific activities for disabled individuals in conjunction with the British Weightlifting Para Powerlifting Programme. Hallam Barbell have recently purchased a specific ‘para power bench’ which allows disabled individuals to train with the competitive set up used in national and international competition. This equipment is rare and Hallam Barbell are one of the few clubs nationally to offer this experience to the disability sport community.
