Every January the world has been marking Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). The UK has marked HMD every year since 2001.
The aim of HMD is to share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the world today.
To commemorate HMD Sheffield are holding a candlelit vigil on Thursday 26 January 2017, 5.30pm to 7pm in the Winter Garden. A number of short films will also be screened in the Winter Garden on the day and participants are encouraged to drop in anytime between 12pm and 5pm.
Disability Sheffield volunteer Deborah Sunday, who undertakes a large amount of work around equality and is a member of the Disability Hub, will be making a reading.

HMD Activities
There will be a collection of posters displayed in the Winter Garden from Monday 20 January to Friday 27 January. Also on Thursday 26 January at 8pm, Showroom Cinemas will screen The Pawnbroker, Sidney Lumet’s 1964 film about a Jewish pawnbroker who survived imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp. Professor Sue Vice will introduce the film and lead a Q&A after the film.
2017 theme: How can life go on?
The central vision of HMD is to learn from the past in order to create a safer, better future. With the theme of ‘How can life go on?’ HMD 2017 asks people to think about what happens after genocide and of our own responsibilities in the wake of such a crime.
