Have you registered to vote in the General Election taking place on Thursday 12 December 2019. If not the deadline of midnight 26 November to register is fast approaching. According to Mencap 64% of people with a learning disability have felt unable to vote in previous elections.
Recently our Sheffield Voices Learning Disability group gave their views on why it is so important for all disabled people to exercise their right to vote.
If you’ve already registered to vote, you don’t need to register again for the General Election. If you have received a poll card at your address, then you are currently registered and can vote in the election as stated on the poll card.
You might need to register again if you’ve changed address or have turned 18 recently:
• You need to register to vote by midnight on Tuesday 26 November 2019
• The deadline for new postal vote applications, or changes to existing postal votes is 5pm on Tuesday 26 November.
• The deadline for receiving new proxy vote applications (not by post) is 5pm on Wednesday 4 December.
• The deadline for applying for an emergency proxy vote – if you are suddenly ill for example – is 5pm on polling day.
Students can choose to register at both their term-time and home addresses (as long as these are in different constituencies) but can only vote in one place. Make sure you are registered at the address where you’d like to vote on 12 December.
