A report by a leading disability organisation claims that discrimination has increased during the last few months as disabled people’s needs have been pushed to one side by government and major organisations.
The Inclusion London report is entitled ‘Abandoned, forgotten and ignored: The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Disabled people’
It explores the lived experiences of disabled people from the outbreak of the Covid-1 pandemic and paints a stark picture from the outset, claiming policymakers ignored their needs and at best considered them as an afterthought. The pandemic has also shone a light on the long-standing structural inequalities and discrimination that deaf and disabled people experience. Their report demonstrates that the measures designed to support at-risk groups introduced by the government,local authorities and other service providers, including supermarkets and pharmacies,are not working for everyone.
The report concludes that “the government needs to make it a priority to understand the needs of disabled people and give serious consideration to their findings and recommendations. It is also vital that Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations and disabled people are involved in developing and planning policies that affect us at local, regional and national levels.”
