Disability History Month Brought To Book

Disability History Month Brought To Book

We’re part of the way through UK Disability History Month and if you want to find out more Sheffield City Council has put together a booklist of titles relating to disability and neurodivergence, with a focus on books by disabled and/or neurodivergent authors.

All the books are available to borrow from Sheffield City Libraries. You can check out the list here.

Meanwhile Sheffield Students Union has shone a spotlight on some of the important figures in disability activism. You can see their list here.

UK Disability History Month began in 2015 and each year’s events have a different theme. This year’s is Disability, Livelihood and Employment and the organisers have put together a package of resources. The month began on November 14th and lasts until December 20th.

Also December 3rd is the United Nations’ International Day Of Persons With Disabilities which is about promoting rights and well-being at every level of society and development, and to raise awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life. The World Health Organisation joins the UN in observing this day each year, reinforcing the importance of securing the rights of people with disabilities, so they can participate fully, equally and effectively in society with others, and face no barriers in all aspects of their lives.

At its headquarters in Geneva, the WHO organizes an annual IDPD event to educate the public, raise awareness, advocate for political will and resources, and celebrate WHO’s achievements.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
