A major conference on street music is calling for contributions from those interested in discussing disabled performers.
The event is due to take place at the University Of East Anglia in Norwich on May 14-15, as part of the Connected Communities scheme, designed to work on understanding the changing nature of communities in their historical and cultural contexts and the role of communities in sustaining and enhancing quality of life
Orrganiser Professor George MacKay AHRC, Leadership Fellow in Film, Television & Media Studies at the University of East Anglia, explained: “We have lots of interesting papers and speakers — but very little from or about disability studies. So I am doing one last push to see if we can get some material at the conference about disability – from African-American blind blues shouters to beggars/buskers crossover, from legislation against crip street performance (as part of the ’ugly laws’) to discussions of disabled street musicians from American singer Larry ‘Wild Man’ Fischer to Congolese band Staff Benda Bilili (pictured) and much more I am sure.”
Details of how to submit a paper can be seen here or you can email George at George.McKay@UEU.AC.UK or telephone him on 01603 592152.
