The Commission On Social Security launched its 8 proposals to improve the benefits system on 12 August, with hundreds watching online. They are now asking for more people to take part in their consultation about their proposals.
The organisation was set up by welfare system users in May last year and all the commissioners are Experts By Experience, coming from a range of claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.
Proposals made include:
*A Guaranteed Decent Income of £222 for a single adult and £322 for a couple (paid on an individual not household basis).
*Child Benefit of £50 per child per week.
*An entirely new start on disability benefit with principles, underpinning points and links with other policy areas.
The Commission say that the proposals offer a hugely simplified but comprehensive approach, with much more realistic benefit rates.
