Over the past year the Chinley and Buxworth Transport Group has been highlighting the issue of poor access at Chinley, an important commuter station on the Manchester/Sheffield mainline.
In January 2016 we made a submission to the National Infrastructure Commission call for evidence on ‘weaknesses in connectivity’ between Northern cities and this summer we have launched a petition to the Department for Transport ( DfT ) calling for better access at Chinley, i.e.to make Chinley station a station with step-free access. The only access to/from the platforms at Chinley, whether rail users are travelling towards/from Manchester or Sheffield, is via a footbridge with steep steps (see picture). The station is a no-go area for anyone with mobility problems or for anyone who using a wheelchair.
Far too many stations in the UK have serious access problems. It’s all very well if a local station has marvellous facilities at the start of a journey, but if access is poor at the destination, people may decide that a train journey is far too problematic to be even worth considering….
It would be great to have your support – please sign our petition which only takes a few seconds.
