Caroline Waugh, a volunteer at Sheffield Cycling 4 All, a project run by Disability Sheffield can be seen on the screen tonight when her trusty but rusty trike – which she used while carrying the Olympic Torch a decade ago – gets a makeover.
She is appearing on BBC2 show Saved And Remade, in which loved but unused objects are transformed into beautiful and functional items by a team of highly skilled master crafters, then revealed to their owners.
Caroline, who first got involved in cycling when she contacted Disability Sheffield’s Information Service, said: “Tonight is the night when I find out what I actually said, as I can’t really remember. I vaguely remember bigging it up in all the right bits, and being a bit dramatic at times.
You can see just what was created and repurposed from my Greenspeed GT5, which was bought for me as a gift by Cycling UK for helping promote Sheffield Cycling 4 All and the Health Champions. I do still cycle everyday, but now Ive got a new trike. And I could not possibly throw my first one away. It’s the one which I rode when I carried the Olympic Torch. And it saved my life.”
