BFI Film Academy Applications 2022 Now Open

BFI Film Academy Applications 2022 Now Open

Are you in your late teens and interested in film? Well you could be on course for success by applying to take part in a learning programme based at the Showroom in Sheffield.

The British Film Institute is currently recruiting for their specialist Programming Residential aimed at 16–19-year-old film fans across the UK. Previous alumni have already gone on to work in the industry at places such as Sheffield Doc/Fest, Warner Brothers and more.

On the residential, young people get to:

  • Plan and pitch their own film festival to be screened at the Showroom Cinema
  • Watch a wide range of British independent cinema
  • Partake in masterclasses on the running of film criticism, indie cinema, marketing, distribution, and film festivals
  • Meet filmmakers, critics, and distributors from across the UK who are renowned in their fields. Speakers include film critics such as Hannah Strong from Little White Lies and Danny Leigh. Those taking part will also gain access to preview screenings and meet filmmakers from across the UK.

The programming residential will take place from 27th July – 31st July in person in Sheffield, followed by four Saturdays which will be hosted online.

“Students usually come from all over the UK to take part, and it’s a great opportunity to meet fellow film fans, learn the role of a cinema programmer and develop professionally within the world of film. 16 to 19-year-olds from across the UK get to learn about film programming, marketing and distribution and eventually put on their own film festival at the Showroom Cinema. Whether you’re a filmmaker, blogger, regular cinemagoer, or someone who simply enjoys watching and talking about films, this exciting and intensive residential programme will give you a real insight into the world of cinema,” said course co-ordinator Nora Murphy.

“We offer a generous bursary scheme to cover any costs that will enable anyone, regardless of financial position, to take part. Students will be mentored throughout their time on the residential and will get the chance to meet various industry professionals on a daily basis who can give tips on how to kick-start a career in film.”

You can apply here. The deadline for applications is 11th July 2022. You can also see the details of last year’s festival.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
