African Women's Experiences of Healthcare in Sheffield

Healthwatch Sheffield has worked with United Women’s Affiliation to explore the barriers facing African women living in underprivileged communities in Sheffield. Their latest #SpeakUp report reveals a variety of topics, including:

• Medication – people feel they are prescribed medication too quickly, and medication isn’t always explained well
• Access to interpreters – appropriate interpreters aren’t always provided, and when there’s a language barrier people need more time to talk
• Access to GPs and dentists – it can be hard to get an appointment, and some people don’t feel listened to by health professionals
• Finance – there’s a lack of clarity about NHS dental and pharmacy charges

Find out what African women said and the changes they’d like to see in their report.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
