Inclusion North, an organisation set up to help people with learning disabilities and autism and their families feel more included in society, have released another edition of their news bulletin. It’s full of exciting news for people with learning disabilities or autism.

People with a learning disability and autism have helped co-produce a hard-hitting video to get their ‘Work with us, not for us’ message across. It is about them being the experts on their own lives, and what good support looks like. The video, Making Plans For Nigel, named after and featuring a 1979 hit single by wacky powerpop band XTC, aims to show the way that some disabled people are often labelled against their will, patronised and not listened to.

Skills for Care are working with Skills for Health, the National Autistic Society and Opening Minds Consultancy to develop a ‘core capabilities framework’ about autism. They are holding 2 co-production sessions in Sheffield on January 21st for paid staff who support autistic people ( AM ) and for people with lived experience of autism ( PM ).Skills for Care will use what you tell them to shape the new framework so that public services can ensure their staff deliver their services in the way that autistic people need. It will also help services to train their staff properly.

Spectrum Theatre Company, an integrated group which contains both autistic and neurotypical talents has launched its Christmas show – a musical entitled Sterling Silver, which is set in Sheffield almost a century ago and tells the story of how buffer girl, Lizzie, and Daniel, heir to Thornton’s cutlery, fall for each other at a time when such things aren’t supposed to happen.

The Friendly Resource Company together with people with learning disabilities and people with autism, with the support of a grant from Awards for All, have developed a workbook including a quiz and videos about the life risks people take every day ,helping people to consider how best to lessen these risks and keep as safe as possible.

The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour campaign, backed by celebrities such as Chris Packham, is creating a week of autism friendly shopping experiences across the UK. Shops, businesses and shopping centres will be holding Autism Hours throughout the second week of October (6-13).
