Get Together at the Octoberfest

Sheffield ME Group are hosting a series of online activities from the 5th to the 23rd of October designed for people affected by ME/Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and/or long Covid symptoms. It’s their very first Octoberfest. Their October calendar has daily events including , mindfulness, nutrition, playreading, singing and writing workshops and a murder mystery! Get together and share good moments with people who understand your condition.

Gear, Gadgets and Gizmos Podcasts

Being disabled often leads to people using huge amounts of ingenuity to make their lives easier. Now a leading equality and inclusion activist has produced podcasts to share others’ tips. Phil Friend, chair of the Research Institute for Disabled Consumers launched the Gear, Gadgets and Gizmos series last year. Phil has completed 16 podcasts featuring a variety of people from the disability world and is always on the lookout for other people willing to take part.

More We Belong Webinars

Disability Rights UK’s ‘We Belong’ engagement campaign has got off to a flying start. DRUK are receiving your emails telling them what needs to change and have have held four online discussion groups with excellent contributions from disabled women and disabled people from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Three more webinars are scheduled to discuss Employment, LGBTQIA and Transport during October.

Off the Shelf Programme of Events

The annual ‘Off the Shelf’ festival programme brought to you by the University of Sheffield and celebrating books, words and ideas is taking place this year from 9-31 October. The organisers are keenly aware that books, reading and conversations are more important now than ever saying “We have worked throughout lockdown to produce uplifting and thought-provoking events that reflect the world around us and we can’t wait to share the whole programme with you. Much of the festival activity will be online but there will also be live events in real venues where we can safely invite audiences to hear some wonderful speakers in person.”

ONS Releases new Coronavirus Disability Data

The Office for National Statistics has released its third set of data showing the impacts of Coronavirus on disabled people during July – revealing that disabled people were more likely to go out to attend medical appointments or take care of others than non-disabled people, and less likely to be socialising and eating out.

Universal Basic Income Plus Proposal

The authors would like to hear your views on their proposal of a basic income that identifies additional bolt-ons for long term illness, disability, and caring.

Have You Used A Dodgy Benefits Advisor?

People claiming benefits often reach out for advice on how to deal with the system – but unfortunately not all advisors are honest and exploit benefit claimants to make money while providing poor or non-existent support. Activist group Disabled People Against Cuts is asking people to tell them about their experiences as they launch a campaign to try to stop these sharks. DPAC has also issued its own advice about selecting a benefits advisor preferably from Citizens Advice.

Call to 'Be Kind' to People Who Are Exempt from Wearing Face Coverings

The government has produced new guidance and a new range of exemption cards calling for the public and businesses to be mindful of and act sensitively towards people who are exempt from wearing a face covering. This comes at a time when charities are asking the government to listen to and better understand the concerns of disabled people and to do more to promote awareness around who is exempt from the face mask rules following reports of disabled people facing hostility from the public and businesses. Changing Places Compulsory from 2021

Changing Places toilets are larger accessible toilets with a wider range of facilities than standard accessible toilets, and include hoists, changing benches and space for carers. From 2021 new buildings including shopping centres, supermarkets, sports and arts venues in England will have to include at least one Changing Places toilet.The government’s announcement will be a major change for building rules in England.

What It's Like To Take Part In Move And Chat

These common household items can also help you get fit during the lockdown if you take part in the weekly Move And Chat sessions set up by Sheffield Cycling 4 All a project run by Disability Sheffield.
