    Commission on Social Security's Consultation Call

    The Commission On Social Security launched its 8 proposals to improve the benefits system on 12 August – with hundreds watching online. Now they are looking for more people to take part in their consultation about the proposals. The organisation was set up in May last year and all the commissioners are Experts By Experience, coming from claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.

    Everyone knows current welfare benefits are failing, but what would be a better approach? The Commission on Social Security ,set up by welfare system users to suggest ways in which it can be improved, has issued an invitation to an online event to discuss their proposals on Wednesday August 12 from 7 to 8.30pm. All the Commissioners are Experts by Experience. This means they each have lived experience of the benefits system and come from a range of claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.

  • Have Your Say on the Future of Adult Social Care in Sheffield

    In June a number of Sheffield residents and representatives of disabled people’s organisations joined together with the Disability Hub and Disability Sheffield to discuss the difficulties they faced around social care.Because of the delay, including the release of the Government Green paper on long term funding for social care for those above retirement age, the Local Government Association (LGA) is taking a stand and seeking feedback via consultation on all adult social care.At the same time, we would be grateful if participants would please respond to our own consultation and help us identify more readily some of the issues facing disabled people and others here in Sheffield.

  • Blue Badge to be extended to people with 'hidden disabilities'

    In the biggest overhaul to the scheme in 40 years the government has announced that people with hidden disabilities, including autism and mental health conditions will be eligible to apply for a Blue Badge next year.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
