Members of performing arts organisation Under The Stars will be acting up at the end of this month and the start of next – with two separate shows at the Crucible Theatre.The Sheffield based charity uses the performing arts to enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities and/or autism. ‘Freedonia’ takes place on Tuesday May 31 and ‘The Many Journeys of Maria Rossini’ the following evening, both in the Studio Theatre starting at 7pm.

We think everyone with a learning disability or autism should get good healthcare. Disability Sheffield is hosting a series of events during the week of 16th-20th May to find out what people’s experiences are of accessing healthcare in Sheffield. if you have a learning disability , autism or you are a carer, do join us. We’ll also send out a survey and offer a phoneline for two weeks so you can call and leave messages for us to tell us what you think.

Are you autistic and enjoy music or singing? In partnership with Burton Street Foundation, The Autistic Adult Choir are starting a free group in Sheffield! They are looking for adults who like to sing or listen to music, who are autistic (no formal diagnosis needed) who might like to be part of a choir that meets once a week. No musical knowledge is necessary.

What should post-diagnostic support look like for autistic adults? Three online workshops are being held for autistic adults at the University of Sheffield to hear your views on this. If you received your diagnosis as an adult from a UK service within the last ten years they would be grateful for your input. A £75 voucher per workshop is available as a thank you if all three workshops are attended.

Free health training for people with a Learning Disability or Autism and their families and parents is available online during March using Zoom. It is about understanding the 4 Major Health Issues – epilepsy, dysphagia, sepsis and constipation.

South Yorkshire Police and the National Autistic Society have worked together to create an Autism Alert Photo ID Card to help the police and other emergency services workers communicate with autistic people more effectively. It is hoped that use of the card will help people with autism feel more comfortable in what could potentially be stressful or frightening situations. A free card is also available for people with a learning disability.

We are appalled and shocked to hear that a mother and stepfather kept their autistic son, Matthew Langley locked in his filthy attic bedroom on Walkley Road, Sheffield for seven months without anyone realising his plight.Matthew had stopped attending a number of services and Sheffield City Council had not replaced a social worker who had been visiting him. We call for an urgent investigation into how this vulnerable young man was left without any support to safeguard him.

Autism Peer Support is where autistic people use the lessons learned from their own experiences to support other autistic people. Skills for Care are holding 12 online/virtual meetings in December 2021 and January 2022 for autistic people, families and other key stakeholders to explore what capabilities are needed for Autism Peer Support.Participants can be paid £15 per hour.

If you work for an organisation which supports people with a learning disability or autism, do you have a way for the people you support to give feedback, raise a concern, or make a complaint? “Ask Listen Do” is a good way of helping people speak up and could also help your service improve. The templates and leaflets are available for free from Speak Up.
