Let's Make Physical Activity More Accessible

Disability Sheffield are launching an exciting new project working to make physical activity more accessible for people with autism, learning disabilities and severe mental health issues.

It’s amazing the difference physical activity can make to people with complex needs. Activities like cycling, swimming, and playing games can get people to open up, laugh, and connect in a way nothing else can. Imagine helping someone with learning disabilities get in the pool for the first time, or the difference you could make to an autistic person by making exercise classes feel safe. It might surprise you to find out what a difference small, simple changes can make to people in our community.

We’ve been speaking to people with autism, learning disabilities and severe mental health issues about what they need to feel safe, confident and positive in physical activity settings.

If you work in a community organisation, leisure centre or run mainstream physical activities we’d love to welcome you to the project at our free event on Wednesday 20th July from 9am – 12.30 including lunch and refreshments.

We’ll be sharing what we’ve found out, as well as launching a new network for community organisations, leisure centres and physical activity providers designed to give support in developing even more accessible activities.

Very good presentation, brave of the speakers to tell their stories and had a very high impact - feedback from Mate/Hate Crime presentation and video session at Safeguarding Working Together Conference

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
